When you hop into one of our games, we realize that company policy and terms of service are the last things on your mind. That's why we're trying our best to keep you informed on big issues like player privacy, refunds, and anti-cheating software, all of which are seeing some changes in the near future. So let's get to it!
What is the Riot Services Privacy Notice?
The Privacy Notice is a detailed explanation of what information Riot Games collects when you use Riot services (like our games, websites, and other applications), including how that information may be used or shared.
Why are you changing the Privacy Notice?
Games are a dynamic industry where shifts in technology, law, or basic business practices can change the way we handle player info, and keeping you informed when these changes occur is one of our top priorities. That's what the Privacy Notice is all about!
Any time the Privacy Notice is altered, we make updates to the public page and change the “Last Modified” date, so you'll know you have the most current information. If these changes include significant adjustments—especially those involving how we process player info—we’ll make sure you hear about it by displaying updates across Riot services or sending you a direct notification.
Where can I find the latest version of the privacy notice?
These changes don't even affect the game I play… Why do I have to accept the new Privacy Notice?
The Privacy Notice is a Riot-wide policy that applies to all of our services. That's why we require everybody to accept the changes, regardless of what game you may be playing.
What do these voice data updates mean for VALORANT, League, Wild Rift, TFT, and Legends of Runeterra?
As of this posting, only VALORANT has plans to examine recorded voice data for review, and only when disruptive voice behavior is reported. Although the updated legal document includes the ability to capture voice data across all our games, there are currently no plans to record voice chat in League of Legends, Wild Rift, or Teamfight Tactics. As Legends of Runeterra does not support voice chat and has no plans to do so, it will also be unaffected.
What if I don’t want my voice chat to be potentially recorded?
Although you must agree to the Privacy Notice to continue playing our games, you can prevent your voice from being recorded by simply turning off voice chat.
Is Riot actively listening to my voice chat?
Absolutely not.
We'll only potentially review voice logs when disruptive voice behavior is reported.
How long do you keep my voice data?
General data storage duration varies according to regional regulations, but data related to your privacy will only be retained up to two years.
It's our mission to only collect and share the absolute minimum amount of data needed to run our games and improve your experience. When we collect data, we will be transparent, we will keep it for only as long as is necessary, and we will protect it as if it were our own.
Are you sure my voice data is secure?
We understand why collecting voice data may seem like a cause for concern, but rest assured that we would never ship a feature like this if we weren’t comfortable having our own data treated the same way.
If you still would rather not have your voice chat captured, you may turn it off.
When will voice evaluations start?
Our new behavior systems for voice chat are currently under development, but we've updated our Privacy Notice in advance to provide visibility as early as possible. When beta testing does begin, it will start with VALORANT in North America before rolling out to other regions.
In addition to this page, the VALORANT team will share more information about how the system will work before they start collecting voice data. There will also be an in-client notification before collection begins.
What are Terms of Service?
Terms of Service are the conditions under which Riot Games offers access to our games, apps, websites, and other services. In short, they are rules both parties agree to follow when using our products.
What is the new refund policy?
As of May 30th, 2021, we’re implementing a new refund policy across all of our games and regions. This refund policy outlines what can and cannot be refunded, processes for requesting refunds, rules governing refunds related to third-party marketplaces (for mobile titles like Wild Rift and Teamfight Tactics), and other information to help you refund content with clarity and ease. You can review it in full here.
What about the update on anti-cheat software in the Terms of Service?
With the launch of Vanguard with VALORANT and the inclusion of kernel driver protection for Riot's future games, we updated the ToS to indicate that installing anti-cheat software may be required to play certain instances of our games.
Whether it's for current or future games, we will always be as transparent as possible when it comes to implementing anti-cheat programs without compromising our solutions. If a new anti-cheat program is in the works—especially one with kernel mode drivers—we'll let you know well before its release.
